Practicum in Cataloging and Library Development


The “We Always Swing”® Jazz Series in Columbia, Missouri is offering a 3 credit hour graduate practicum opportunity for a student in the University of Missouri School of Information Science & Library Technologies for the Fall 2013 semester.

The practicum will encompass establishing an online catalog of the “We Always Swing”® Jazz Series’ 7000+ items for its online members. Work will include:

  • Researching and selecting an appropriate open-access library cataloging system, in conjunction with the practicum supervisor and Jazz Series’ director;
  • Creating standard bibliographic and item records for the Jazz Series’ resources;
  • Implementing a circulation system to allow the lending of Jazz Series’ library and recorded materials;
  • Developing a collection development plan and library lending policies; and
  • Other tasks as needed.

This is a tremendous opportunity to help develop a library from the ground up, and will offer practical experience in both cataloging and library administration. Knowledge of music, particularly jazz, is preferable but not required. Candidates will be working under a degreed MLIS and are eligible for ISLT 7381 Practicum in Information Agencies credit.
