This course examines the culture, operations, and environment of academic libraries in the context of institutions of higher education and revolutionary changes in communication media and technologies. The emphasis is on communities, cultures, and systems of scholarship and on how college and university libraries contribute to academic teaching and research missions. Topics include: the origins and continuity of intellectual traditions; the impact of changes in media and globalization on academic institutions; collections, collectors, and librarianship; as well as the service roles, organization, management, and governance of academic libraries. Guest lecturers drawn from various specializations will share insights on current issues and challenges (these will be available to students enrolled in all sections of the course).
